Managing in Uncertain Times - 6 Week Training Series

Based on the book Show Up Hard, this six-week training series is an “antidote to burnout,” equipping your staff with the knowledge and skills to lead with empathy during uncertain times and to avoid burnout.

This training package is customized for each organization and can include printed copies of “Show Up Hard” to be read with the training program. Here is the overarching 3-part structure:

1. Customization Phase

  • Meet with organization executive leadership to learn about their goals and concerns, as well as meeting with managers over specific teams and units

  • Customize training program for staff, presenting plan to leadership

  • Begin 6 weeks of workshop trainings with staff

2. Training Series Phase

From there, we move into the 6 week training program*:

  • Training 1 || Introductory Session: In this session, staff will be introduced to the training and the planned sessions. Staff will learn how to focus on their “locus of control,” learning skills such as the skills in how to evaluate the specific ways they invest in their own resilience.

  • Training 2 || Boundary Setting: In this session, your staff will learn the nuanced ability to set and maintain boundaries, re-creating boundaries with their work and patient-clients over time as the staff’s respective needs and ability to show up shift.

  • Training 3 || Crisis Theory: Understanding the arch of a crisis and how planning in advance for how to navigate a crisis equips ourselves at the individual and team level to respond with resilient strategies.

  • Training 4 || Implementing Feedback Loops: Baking the process of giving and receiving feedback into meeting and report structures. Tips for surfacing tensions before serious problems arise and equipping staff across the organizational hierarchy with tools for engaging in active feedback loops.

  • Training 5 || Managing Up & Down: How to deal with the board and the leadership team, or how to deal with your team + your manager.

  • Training 6 || Resource Access: Mapping the resources available for clients and staff supports resiliency in crisis and organizational change management. Using a client-centered mindset, identifying best practices for understanding and accessing resources is a hallmark of a well-equipped team.

*Sessions may change or be adjusted, based on the needs of your staff

3. Evaluation Phase

Following the completion of the training, staff will be surveyed about the experience. This information will be used in a follow-up report submitted to leadership.

For me, the empathy circles have been such a beautifully simple tool for me to show up in a more useful way for my team, my peers, and my friends. It showed me that while I thought I was being the most supportive person I could be, I was actually doing those who sought my help a disservice. I was more enmeshed than you could possibly be!

I now have Shannon’s empathy circles drawn for myself on a sticky note on my monitor at work. A little reminder to myself to take a minute and think about how I can be the best Compassionate Witness I can be for people, to ask the right questions, to walk alongside rather than ahead, to help them find the strength in themselves.

TESTIMONIALS

“Shannon’s training gave me a framework to reconsider how I was helping. I had the showing up part down, but I needed some “containers” to help me view and better understand my capacity to help. Shortly after the training I had a chance to give her ideas a practical test drive, and it felt so good to see how much easier it was to make a big difference: reconsidering how I show up.”

— Adam Lemmon Founder and Owner, Badass Backpacks

“Remember that scene from The Matrix where Neo puts his hand up, stops the bullets in midair, and then picks one out of the air to examine it? That’s what I feel capable of doing now after learning Shannon’s circles framework. When life starts to feel like that scene from The Matrix, I’m now able to see it, stop, and examine the “bullets” and myself.”
